slice 'n dice

I've committed myself to making a 'slice' for the church fair. Now I thought this meant a kamikaze slasher movie attack on anyone about to buy a saveloy (a mercy killing, your honour) but it turns out this is a sweet thing to be had with tea. ("May I give you a slice of jam and pecan tart, Mrs Jones?")

This is not really my area of cooking. At all.

Would a key lime pie count? Black satin pie? Banoffee?

gah.

The trials and tribulations of a lost South African amatuer chef.
What's wrong with a nice bit of squid to dunk in their tea? ;-)

  1. Hey Dave - you can make sandwiches instead, if you like!!! that would be just as good, even better maybe especially if you were to make little rolls instead of a loaf and put some ham and pickles in them!!!
All you have to do is ask, and you will receive (help). Us Ozzies are luverly people (most of the time) and us ozzies on flinders are even luverlier!!!!!! we all love you heaps.

  2. Do you need any recipes? Desserts are one of my specialties! I have a killer cinnamon bread that is really easy to make.

  3. Wait a minute! I'll take the pies! (Although how I'll get them from there to here is worrisome :-)

  4. Rosie - Aussies ARE lovely, and Flinders ones, doubly so. They've been good to us and so it's important to me to give back my best efforts. The challenge will be good for me -it's just, like most men, I tend to focus on good solid food and not do many cakes and desserts.

  5. Blloonaticbmber - the cinnamon bread sounds worth finding out about. Please. I've got quite a lot of recipes, and do do some desserts, just none that really fit the slice model - mostly being quite expensive to make for dinner for 6 (chocolate Pave) let alone larger numbers or dish-into-a-bowl things

  7. Slices are brainless and easy and the mainstay of the busy community member. Would you like me to send you a couple of recipes? Trust me, they're easier than breads and pies.

  8. Gillian, please. They may be easier and mainstay, but I learned to cook from Richard Olney's good cook series - which doesn't do brainless or easy. It's an area in which I have never ventured.

  11. This is also a pretty popular one:

    Sweet Marie Bars
    1/2 cup butter
    1/2 cup corn syrup
    1/2 cup brown sugar
    2 cups Rice Krispies (bubbles)
    1 cup chopped nuts (opt)
    1 tbsp. butter

    Topping:
    Chocolate chips (melted)

Melt peanut butter, brown sugar and corn syrup in a double boiler. When slightly cooled, stir in remaining ingredients. Pour into greased 8' x 8' pan. Cover with melted chocolate.

  12. Mmmm Slices..

I guess you could call them somewhere between a biscuit and a cake!

    I remember..
    - Lemon slice
    - Mars Bar slice
    - Coconut slice
    - Jelly Slice
    - I think it was a frangipanni slice.. Mmmmm

They were all delicious! (I hate being on a diet!)

    Cheers!

  15. They are sold as Rice Bubbles in Australia. :-) And if you can't find corn syrup, that Roger's syrup (?) might do the trick.
