kissing-salad (lettuce alone)

I do NOT like my salad to hop at me! Caterpillers in my lettuce are one thing. Frogs entirely another. I picked a lettuce from the garden and brought it in, pulled the leaves apart into a bowl of cold water to crisp up... and

  1. Added protein!

[You're a mid-list author; can you really afford to be picky?]

  2. That's so cute -- reminds me of that froggy in your loo in Eshowe. You seem to attract frogs!

  3. Yes, I think they are really cute, but not on my dinner plate! I do not want this one to over-winter with us in the bathroom.

I know we can't be picky, but jumping food I draw the line at!

  5. Mike Tyler would never forgive me for forgetting to mention that the presence of a frog means you have a very healthy garden, as frogs are notoriously vulnerable to bad chemicals.

And I think a meal composed of jumping food would be fun. Although I'm now having flashbacks to the disasterous events of a certain Sector General novel that featured motile food...

  6. This seems a rather good reason to move from being a midlist author, or to move midlist authors incomes to a rather more generous share of the pie (rather than the very small frog). I did use some snail-bait, but that's the only chemical intervention these lettuces -and garden have seen. Hunter-instinct food?

  7. Our dogs are called Pugsley and Wednesday after the Addams Family, so I suppose this is just a hint that we should play with our food?

  8. Hey, hey, hey! Some Tasmanian frog species are quite endangered. I don't know if that's one of 'em, but I suspect his presence in your lettuce only adds to his endangeredness.

In any case, you're not allowed to mess with the endangered species around here. So if froggy wants your lettuce, then it's bacon-____-tomato sandwiches for YOU, buddy. And your Caesar Salad is going to look just plain weird.

  9. Luckily the sweet thing was repatriated to the outdoors under a wet bush, so I am sure he will go on to live a long and happy life.

Two of his cousins were on the glass door catching flying things a few nights ago, so they seem to be quite plentiful in this area!

  10. I'm sure this counts a lucky, Dave!

    Probably for the frog.

  11. does it feel sort of like being in Discworld? After all, Granny Weatherwax says that her hair is so perfect because she has a newt in her well, and always takes care to fish it out of the water before drawing water for herself...

  12. (chuckle) It's got rather a diskworldish feel to life, yes. Things are rather more Ramtops than Anhk-Morpork though.

  13. i think i'd rather visit the Ramtops, anyway :) Ankh-Morpork is much more like NYC *without* the air conditioning. lol
