crown him

I had a dentist visit this morning to have a crown stuck back on, and at the same time paid my licenses for wallaby and muttonbird for the season. I think I will pass on duck and quail. I'm still quite keen on merely farming quail, and dodging shot is something my teeth don't need. I found my 1600 lumen torch had arrived - tonight we'll see if it is any good. I am battling on with this book, but I am losing heart right now. The copy edits smack in the middle of the run don't help. Anyway, once more into the breach. I'm going to collect some pipis at lunch time tomorrow, first break for ages. It's only 15 minutes to the estuary. I bought some pork fat for our next sausage experiment, which I hope will be less strongly flavoured than lamb fat. And now... to work.

Oh. As a freebie from the 28th to the 1st -

and while the official release date for DOG & DRAGON is the 3rd of April, some folk are reporting having got their copies.

If you use these links I get a few cents from the deal :-)

  1. I bought the ebook of D&D so got it early. they are usually available a fortnight before the paper release date. Unfortunately Red Fiddler is not showing as a promo yet so I'll try later.

  2. My sister texted me last night that she received D&D! We ordered it for her Birthday, but told her it would probably come after. Instead it arrived early.

  3. I hope my dog and dragon arrives in time for the holidays....we'll be on the island next week, and from what I've heard about the weather lately, doing a lot of curled up in front of the fire reading.

  4. Flinders Island? Actually the weather looks promising and has been quite nice, I've just been too busy to take best advantage of it. Nights are chilling off but the days are wonderful - If you want to stop in for a cuppa sometime, you can contact me through the davefreer.com site.

  6. Those links seem to be Amazon only. I was going to buy Dragon's Ring and Dog & Dragon as ebooks from the Baen website as I have a Sony Reader not a Kindle.

Does this mean you don't get paid at all - or just not as much?

(Still can't comment as me - aargh! Jacki)

    1. Blogger REALLY is pushing my buttons. I still get paid. I believe in being open about the royalties, as secrecy certainly doesn't serve authors or readers well. The Baen e-book rate is better than any other traditional publisher's rate (20% as opposed to the typical 14.5%) but a long way from Amazon's rate 70%, or the rate offered by ebook only companies (around 50%). Baen are probably the best of the traditional houses around, and their rate I believe is more a product of historical deals (ie they don't make a lot out of it), than of trying to prop up paper publishing by overcharging on e-books. So please, rather by the e-book from Baen. On paper copies, I get IIRC 8% on the paper book, and by 'pointing' customers at it another 6% from Amazon. So I'd FAR rather that customers who came via my site bought on Amazon than anywhere else. I still have some bills to pay!

  7. So I should get them from an e-book only company? (I'd like to do Amazon to get you more money but I don't have a Kindle and my Sony only takes ePub and pdf so it doesn't work for me) Can you point me at one that sells your books and gives you 50%? - I've tried a few and their selections don't include DR and D&D. Thanks, Jacki.

    1. By Contract only Baen can sell those until the book goes out of print or for the life of the contract. Typically this is 12 years, however this may be extended if the book is still in print.
